Planet X USA LLC
Titus/On-One
Thanks for visiting Titus and On-One's webstore. Since One-One's original founding in Sheffield, UK--over twenty years ago--we have sought to inspire and equip
cyclists with the best equipment possible. As the original direct-to-consumer bicycling brand, our parent-company Planet X is currently the UK's second-largest bicycle manufacturer. Our roots in Planet X and On-One directly influence the way we deliver our customers the best-valued product available.
Recognizing an opportunity to grow its presence in the United States, Planet X acquired the legendary Titus Cycles in 2010 and began selling its storied bikes direct-to-consumers. Planet X relocated Titus' headquarters from Tempe, AZ to America's bicycling Mecca: Portland, OR. From its location off North Williams Ave, our Portland office also began selling the UK's original, no-nonsense, mountain bike brand: On-One. In 2011, Planet X decided to consolidate its US distribution channel, combining Titus/On-One's operations with those of the Planet X brand. Now under the banner of Planet X USA, our warehouse in Portland operates as the North American home for Titus Cycles, Planet X, On-One, and Guerciotti. Since putting Titus and On-One under the same roof, both brands have learned a lot from each other. Heading up Titus' design and innovation department is seasoned industry leader, Brant Richards. Brant has been in the cycling industry for over 25yrs, working up from sales assistant, through journalism, to be the editor of MBR magazine and Bikemagic.com He then left journalism to start On-One bikes with Planet X owner, Dave Loughran. At On-One, Brant transformed the brand into a direct-sales model, before leaving for a two-year period to work with Nukeproof on their World Cup Downhill bike "Scalp", their all-mountain "Mega" bikes, and re-launch the Vitus Bikes brand in Europe. About On-One
Throw convention by the wayside and unleash your creativity. Mash up
frames, forks and wheels to build a singletrack ripper, a do it all
single-speed, or a cutting edge 29er with road wheel versatility and
flat-bar handling. On-One is about choice, not compromise.
Technology
Technology is a wonderful thing, but only if you know how to make it work for you.
Our
first Inbred bikes were relatively simple steel, because it did what we
needed it too for our designs. We then built a few posh Reynolds 853
ones to see what they were like. Riding them back to back with our own
evolved DN6 blend of steel tubing we could barely tell a difference
though, except for the fact they cost about three times more. That's why
we just use DN6 tubes on our steel bikes now. There's a similar
story with Easton RAD and Scandium tubing and our own ScandAL frames,
which we've honed and worked to be as good as any alloy frames out
there. Without the extra cost.
We also work with one of the best carbon factories in the world
helping them refine their processes in return for getting the best
performing pieces ourselves. We don't just make our bikes using
the latest technology, we make them capable of using the latest
technology too. We were one of the first brands to make a 29er that
really rode well, and now our range is one of the most extensive
available. Where it makes sense we fit ISCG mounts that'll take chain
guides or Truvativ Hammerschmidt two speed cranks. We use tapered
headtubes for stiffer 1.5 to 1.125in fork steerers and oversized press
fit BB92 bottom brackets on our latest carbon bikes too. The result is that On Ones are genuinely some of the most technologically advanced bikes you can buy at any price level.
Performance
We weren't a performance brand when we started, but then people kept
winning stuff on our bikes. Now we've started designing bikes with them
to make them even faster.
Our first inbreds were designed as
bikes 'just for riding really'. They seemed to be really popular with
people who did a huge amount of 'just riding'. The sort of people who
turn up for epic events and happen to end up on the podium. Then we made
the 29ers which opened up a whole new scale of whup ass that just
bewildered all the people who were getting beaten by a couple of hundred
quid steel frame with a rigid fork To be honest we thought this
was really funny, because we like our riders to really enjoy their
bikes, especially riders like 24hr and Duathlon demon Twinklydave. So we
built our ScandAL 26 and 29er bikes out of the lightest alloy tubesets
we could find for people who really wanted to rip along at races or
whenever they got to ride.
That includes horribly fast folk like adventure racer Richard Usher
who's been a big part of the design process for our state of the art
carbon fibre Whippet and Lurcher frames. They're lighter, stiffer and
faster than anything else we've made before and if it's performance
you're after these really are going to take some beating. Value
We started On One because we were sick of riding badly designed cheap
bikes and expensive ones that looked clever but didn’t actually work.
That idea of honest value is still the baseline for all our bikes.
If
you’ve got the right team good design and doesn’t cost any more than
bad design. OK it takes you more time than just picking a pre built
frame and putting your own stickers on it, but we reckon it’s well worth
it. Our Inbred bikes were an immediate hit because they ticked all the
mud clearance, sweet steel feel, sorted geometry, singlespeed ready
boxes without costing a bomb. Then we blew up the whole 29er market in
the same way, dropping the beautiful handling Inbred 29er into a world
of very expensive, but badly thought out barges.
Even our premium line bikes are radically affordable compared to the
opposition. It’s not because we cut corners, it’s because our designs
are so good factories like to make our bikes for us. That sounds really
big headed, but it’s true. As part of the deal that gets us our carbon
frames beautifully built by one of the best factories at their best
price, they get to sell the design on to other brands in other
countries. We did the same with Lynskey and our award winning
perfect ten Ti456, working hand in hand with Mark and co in Tennessee to
produce the perfect titanium tubing blend for our innovative geometry.
Look how many people they’re making bikes for now. Now we’re working
with Van Nicholas on tapered headtubes and manipulated tube rear ends
for our next batch of Ti bikes. We do the same with the components
we select too. If you’re a regular on this site you’ll notice complete
bike specs tend to fluctuate frequently. That’s because if we can get a
cracking deal on something from a supplier we’ll buy the lot. After all
if we can get XT this month for the price of Deore last month you’re
probably happy to cope with a bit of change now and then. If
you’ve dealt with us before you’ll also know that honesty is always our
default policy. We’ve been doing this for decades because we stand by
our customers and see them right.
